Doors of Mercy and The Gospel of Luke
Catholic Scripture Study International
Catholic Scripture Study International (CSS) is an in-depth yet easy to understand study that is written in light of Catholic Tradition. It offers solid scripture teaching that is easy for beginners to understand, yet informative and challenging enough for the more advanced Bible student. This is the eleventh year that CSS is offered at our parish. However, no previous Bible Study experience is necessary in order to enjoy these classes! We will begin an 18-week study of the Gospel of Luke in November, 2016.
Also, in this Year of Mercy, for 8 weeks beginning in September, we will study “Doors of Mercy,” a beautiful study of God’s mercy through state-of-the-art videos and full color, glossy materials.
Classes for both studies will take place on Monday evenings from 7:00pm - 8:30pm and on
Thursday mornings from 9:45am - 11:30am. Choose the time most convenient for you! Doors of Mercy classes begin on Monday, September 12, and on Thursday, September 15. The study of The Gospel of Luke will begin on Monday, November 14, and Thursday, November 10. We study one lesson per week through April, and we take breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Spring Break. All classes are in the Education Center.
Registration: The cost of the book for Doors of Mercy is $22, the cost of the materials for the study of The Gospel of Luke is $38, and the total for both studies is $60. You may fill out a registration form in the Parish Office to indicate the class or classes you plan to attend, and drop off a check made payable to MBS Church. Register by August 29 to ensure that you will have the materials in time for the first Doors of Mercy class. Late registrations will be accepted, however there may be a shipping charge added to the cost of the materials.
Doors of Mercy (Sept.-Nov.): In this study that is perfect for the Year of Mercy, we will embark on a journey through salvation history, exploring the covenants God has made with humanity, and learning how He used these covenants to gradually reveal the depths of His mercy. We will begin with Adam and Eve and continue through the times of Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, the prophets and the coming of the promised Savior. The weekly class begins with a video lesson (15-20 minutes) by Fr. Jeffrey Kirby and a 5-10 minute life application video. After the state-of-the-art videos we will break into small groups to discuss the material. There is no written homework for this 8-week class but there will be recommended Bible reading.
The Gospel of Luke (Nov.-April): The study of Luke: “The Gospel of Mercy” includes 28 parables, 15 of which are found only in the Gospel of Luke. We will gain profound insights into the merciful Heart of God in this 18-week study with commentary written by Dr. Paul Thigpen. Classes will begin with prayer, a 10-15 minute teaching video from Dr. Thigpen and a 5-7 minute Pastoral Life Application video by Fr. Jeffrey Kirby, shot on location in Rome and Assisi. We break into small groups to discuss the videos and the homework which includes reading from Luke, reading the commentary and answering about 5 questions.
